Kirk Mahlen

Kirk Mahlen is an Advisor at StarBridge Advisors, LLC.  Kirk is a creative and results-oriented healthcare executive with over 30 years of hands-on consulting, provider and health plan operations, academic, and vendor experience who specializes in highly successful IT-enabled business transformation. He most recently served as interim Vice-President, Information Technology (IT) and Chief Information Officer (CIO) at Silver Cross Hospital, New Lenox, IL.

Recent experience includes serving as Go-Live Readiness Advisor for Wyckoff Heights Medical Center, Brooklyn, NY; interim VP, IT and CIO at Kootenai Health, Coeur d’Alene, Idaho; Contracting, Strategy, and Implementation Planning Consultant at Lake Region Health System, Fergus Falls, MN; IT Turnaround Advisor at Commonwealth Care Alliance, Boston, MA; Strategy Consultant at MD Revolution, San Diego, CA; interim CIO for Redwood Falls Area Hospital (now Carris Health), Redwood Falls, MN; and Operations Advisor for Tria Orthopedic – Park Nicollet, Bloomington, MN.

Kirk has served in a variety of leadership roles at consulting, provider, health plan, and technology firms. He served as Specialist Leader for Deloitte Consulting, LLC where he led a successful Epic implementation for St. Anthony’s Medical Center (now Mercy Hospital South), St. Louis, MO and an Epic strategy / planning engagement for University Medical Center and Rutger’s University, Newark, NJ.  Prior to that he was involved in the sale and delivery of strategy / planning engagements for Dearborn Advisors, Chicago, IL.  During this time, he spent 1 year as interim Vice-President, IT and CIO for St. John’s, Springfield, IL, the flagship hospital for Hospital Sisters Health System.

From 1999 to 2008, he served as National VP, IT, and Regional CIO for Catholic Health Initiatives (now CommonSpirit Health), Denver, CO where he led transformational initiatives and had operational responsibility for 23 local and regional hospital organizations.  From 1990 to 1999, he worked as a Senior Manager for Ernst & Young, Minneapolis, MN and was involved in leading numerous strategy / planning, vendor evaluation / selection, contract negotiation, custom development, and systems implementation projects involving leading healthcare technology vendors.  Previously, he spent 7 years with McKesson Corporation (and 3 predecessor organizations) in San Francisco, Boston, and eventually managing the New York regional office.

Kirk has been active with HIMSS, CHIME and HFMA.  He has published, spoken at national and regional conferences, led planning committees, and received numerous awards including HFMA Fellowship status and designation as a Certified Professional in Health Information Management.  He holds an MBA degree from Golden Gate University, San Francisco, CA.
